Preventative Plan
vs Gum Health Plan

Those with active or a history of gum disease are not eligible for the Preventative Plan. Please consider our Perio Plan instead. Gum disease is a serious chronic disease. It is the leading cause of tooth and dental implant loss. We want to make sure you’re getting exactly what you need.

I look forward to getting to meet you,

Dr. Nick

    • Red, swollen, or tender gums or other pain in your mouth

    • Bleeding while brushing, flossing, or eating hard food

    • Gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth, causing the teeth to look longer than before

    • Loose or separating teeth

    • Pus between your gums and teeth

    • Sores in your mouth

    • Persistent bad breath

    • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

  • Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease. It causes the gums to become red, swollen, and bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort at this stage. Luckily, gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good at-home oral care. Our Preventative Plan is designed to PREVENT the progression from Gingivitis to Gum Disease.

  • Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis (Gum Disease). With time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums and stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body essentially turns on itself, and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are destroyed. Gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets between the teeth and gums that can become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may fall out or need to be removed.

Periodontitis diagnosis is typically classified by stage and grade. After your a thorough assessment of your unique case, your dentist can assign a stage ranging from initial to severe that describes the acuteness of disease.

If we need to make a change in your plan type we can take care of it at your exam visit.

Why might I need the Perio (Gum Health) Plan?

  • Gingivitis

If you haven’t lost any bone then the Preventative Plan is for you. Our goal is to Prevent Disease.

  • Mild Gum Disease

    Mild Gum Disease

Once bone is lost it doesn’t grow back. Our goal in this situation is to stop the disease,

  • Moderate Gum Disease

    Moderate Gum Disease

With moderate bone loss you are at risk of loosing teeth. Your work with the hygienist is critical to stop the disease. Then maintain the health of the gums and bone to stop the progression of bone loss.

  • Severe Gum Disease

    Severe Gum Disease

Gum disease is bacterial in nature. It can be transmitted either from one tooth to another or from one person to another. Our Gum Health Plan is designed to stop this infection process.

  • Tooth Loss

    Tooth Loss

Gum disease usually doesn’t cause pain until the teeth are loose. If an infection goes unaddressed tooth removal can be the only option.

Periodontal disease is the primary cause of tooth and dental implant loss.

Our genetics can predispose us for periodontal disease, just like heart disease or diabetes. Like any chronic disease, we cannot simply cure periodontal disease, but we can treat it and help you maintain good oral health to reduce your risk for progression of the disease that could lead to tooth or implant loss.

This is our individualized recommended plan for you to stabilize and maintain your periodontal health and prevent tooth and/or implant loss.

Risk Factors for Gum Disease:

  • Tooth Abscess

  • Worn fillings / crowns

  • Poorly fitting dentures

  • Tooth Mobility

  • Poorly maintained dental implants

  • Dry mouth

  • Medications

  • Diabetes

  • Smoking

  • Heart disease

  • Sleep Apnea

Just like Heart Disease,
there is no cure for Gum Disease.

This person has mild to moderate gum disease. There is nothing we can do to ‘grow’ the bone back. It’s lost forever. However, with proper care we can help to keep these teeth for the rest of their life.

This photo was taken 3 months following Gum Infection Therapy. Much of the swelling is gone. Now you can see and appreciate how much destruction had been going on under the surface.

You can see how much of the roots are exposed. To clean these teeth thoroughly will require special instruments and attention. We call this high level cleaning Periodontal Maintenance. This extra work is the difference between a Preventative Plan and a Gum Health Plan.
