Dr. Nick and Dr. Kari's Orthodontic Journeys
Interceptive or phase one orthodontics was a critical part to both Dr. Kari and Dr. Nick’s personal dental history. When Nick was about 8 years old the orthodontist that his mother worked for noticed that he had a deep underbite, sometimes called a ‘bull-dog’ look. Using a special appliance for about 6 months he was able to correct Nick’s severe underbite. At age 14 he completed the treatment with traditional braces. Dr Kari had the exact opposite problem, she had a severe overbite. Unfortunately, her dentist didn’t recommend two-phase orthodontic treatment for her condition early on. By age 13 her orthodontist was able to make her teeth look straight, but not to correct her ‘buck teeth’. She was very self conscious about the appearance of her teeth and was unable to chew properly.
In her 20’s Dr Kari had a surgery that involved breaking and reposition the jaw to correct the alignment of her teeth. This likely would not have been necessary if she would have had interceptive orthodontics. Because of Dr. Nick and Dr. Kari’s very different experiences and the high likelihood of their daughter’s need for phased orthodontic treatment Dr Kari has completed additional training in orthodontics to help prevent children, including her daughter, from having to go through the surgery she experienced.
